My research and major interest at
present centres around the ARDERN of Timperley family that I have traced
back as far as John ARDERN Yeoman of Timperley who died 1656. I have all
of the direct line from him to myself, but am a bit sketchy on wives of
my ancestors up until the late 1700's ( I generally have wives first
names only). The lineage is shown on my web pages. It is very likely
that John who d. 1656 was a grandson (or son), of Robert ARDERNE
illegitimate son of William ARDERNE (of Timperley Hall) Mayor of
Altrincham who died 1584. Robert the only male, was the last of the
ARDERNE of Timperley noble line recorded in visitations, because first
heir to the ARDERNE of Timperley estate was only daughter Sybilla who
married George BRERETON of Ashley. Of course BRERETON then came by the
Timperley estates although William's will expressly commands BRERETON to
look after Robert and his wife Ann. If I can close the gap between my
John d. 1656 and Robert, then my tree will run back to the ARDERNE of
Harden line through the founder of the Timperley branch, Charles younger
son of John ARDERNE of Harden (circa 1400) and then (documented) further
back to 1100 AD in Eustace de ARDERNE of County Warwick.

Dunham Massey and
Bowdon: Our oldest name of this spelling,
Josiah (1671-1741) is buried in Bowdon churchyard along with his wife
Martha. He was the personal servant to George Booth, the 2nd Earl of
Warrington for 40 years at Dunham Masey and there is a very high quality
grave stone in Bowdon churchyard in his memory. I have tried without any
success to find anyone prior to that date who can be linked with the
family. I have no idea if Josiah moved to the area with the Earl of
Warrington or if he was already living in the area before that date.
There are other variants such as Fythion, Phytheon, Fitheon from Tetton,
Brereton and Warmingham etc prior to 1700 but I've never been able to
link any of these with our current spelling. I have searched the
Bishop's Transcripts from 1600 for Bowdon but can't find any older
ancestors. His descendants moved to Breightmet, Bolton around 1740 and
established fist a bleachworks and then some of the first cotton mils in
Bolton and Farnworth. The mills remained in the family until about 1906.
There's a Phethean Street in Bolton and one in Farnworth! "
